Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about working with a private investigator.
How much does a private investigation cost?
Investigation costs vary depending on the type of case, complexity, geographic area, and time required. R7 Investigations offers a free initial consultation where we assess your situation and provide a clear estimate before any work begins. There are no hidden fees or surprise charges.
Is everything I tell you confidential?
Absolutely. Everything you share with R7 Investigations — your identity, your situation, and the details of your case — is held in strict confidence. We do not share client information with any third party without your explicit consent, except as required by law.
How long does an investigation take?
The timeline depends entirely on the nature of the case. A skip trace may be completed in 24–48 hours. A background investigation typically takes 3–5 business days. Surveillance operations are scheduled based on your needs and the subject’s routine. We will give you a realistic timeline estimate during your consultation.
Can the evidence you gather be used in court?
Yes. All investigations conducted by R7 are performed legally and ethically, with court admissibility in mind. Video surveillance is time-stamped and documented in chain-of-custody format. Written reports are prepared to professional standards suitable for use in legal proceedings, depositions, and hearings.
Are you licensed in Illinois?
Yes. Robert L. Kieffer has been a licensed private detective in the state of Illinois since 1996. R7 Investigations holds all required state licenses and operates in full compliance with the Illinois Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerprint Vendor, and Locksmith Act.
Do you work with attorneys?
Yes — a significant portion of R7’s caseload comes from attorneys who need investigative support for civil litigation, divorce proceedings, custody cases, personal injury defense, and criminal matters. We understand the legal standards required for evidence and work closely with legal teams to deliver what they need.
Is surveillance legal?
Yes, when conducted properly. Surveillance in public places and from public vantage points is legal in Illinois. R7 Investigations operates strictly within the boundaries of Illinois law and applicable federal regulations. We never trespass, never record in areas where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy, and never conduct any activity that would be considered illegal.
Where do you operate?
R7 Investigations is based in Illinois and provides statewide coverage throughout the state. We also conduct investigations in neighboring states and can coordinate nationwide investigations through our professional network when required.
What if the investigation doesn’t find what I’m looking for?
We report what we find — nothing more, nothing less. If surveillance reveals no suspicious activity, that is a documented result in itself. Many clients find that a negative result provides the peace of mind they were looking for. We will never fabricate or embellish findings.
